The Darkness of Ettipus
Ettipus was a parable for all humanity, said the old men of Thebes. Ettipus wanted his citizens to look on him and understand the full depths of his shame. He did not want to see a world of unmitigated ugliness. Nothing lay ahead for him. Death would have blessed him long ago if it had taken him. That again is the EF Watling translation published by Penguin in 1974.
