John Avlon: The political system incentives are messed up. It's going to give us bad policy and polarization and dysfunction in people turning on each other by design, he says. Avlon: What you do is get rid of the party primaries; then you have an open primary where anyone can vote for any candidate. He adds that ranked choice voting will make extremes less popular and less likely to win.Avlon: Sarah Palin was underrated as a press secretary but she made this change in Alaska with her Alaskan state legislator Mary Peltola.
