When children arrive at secondary, notionally they are pretty fluent readers. But in early on in primary school those proficiencies aren't secured yet. So when you're trying to teach science or geography, not only are they novice in the geography or the history or the science, but they're also novice in writing and number. And it's recognition, like you're teaching history to a six year old, their concept of time is virtually non-existent. Some children could barely remember the difference between yesterday and last week.
