The BBC was broadcasting live from the course with legendary sports presenter Des Linham. A police specialist explosives team was making a detailed search of the stands just 29 minutes after the race should have started. They found a suspect package and two controlled explosions were carried out. As police continued searching the buildings thousands of people had been left stranded outside the race course unable to get to their cars or coaches. Jenny Pittman, one of the horse trainers on duty that day said: "Anybody that could be involved in such a disgusting act is just unbelievable"
