The plan is that when images were represented more or less as bitmaps in the font, like you couldn't store like 50,000 variations of the same bitmaps. So right now, I think moving from PNG to vector for emoji, it would help a lot because we don't have to redesign every single emoji. And then again, the color we want would help from the fact that for each individual, we can define a different palette as long as the font is designed that way.
