The Corruption of the Best

The French are I guess the corruption of the best is the worst. The Sicilian Vespers by Stephen Runtzmann which is just this fascinating account of the trebles in Sicily and indeed in all of Europe in the I guess 13th century. And it seems to me that France has always kind of had this sort of duality. You get extremely great thinkers, you get extremely Catholic but at the same time you get other people who sort of make the faith into being about being French.
