Pink Floyd started out as an R&B band. Bob Close was the only one of them who could really play the blues. They had to find a different style after he left. Sid Barrett turned out to be a wonderfully eccentric songwriter. Their new sound combined his strange whimsical songs about gnomes and gingerbread men with Extended instrumental explorations which they started doing live so they could play longer sets without repeating songs. By late 1966 the pink Floyd were generating some serious buzz And they were signed to EMI in January of 1967 their first single Arnold Blaine made it to number 20 on the UK chart even though several radio stations Bandit for being about a clothesline rating transvestite
