Simone Natalay is the author of Victorian Spiritualism and the Rise of Modern Media Culture. In 2000, three women posted a fake profile online of Kathy McGinty and men called her for phone sex. Instead of getting an actual person, they got answers prerecorded by Julia and Derek into a Yamaha recording device and sampler. When the men called to talk to Kathy, Derek, and Julia also recorded these calls, the results are completely bizarre. It wasn't easy finding any extended clips of those calls that I felt like I could just put at the top of the show.
