Given the diminished position of women in Athenian society, it is unsurprising then that Menander's female characters tend to be limited in their overall complexity. We get relatively little in the way of characterization or agency, oftentimes being reduced to only a few spoken lines in the entirety of the play. The errors and mistakes of men, whose actions would affect the entire household, are inherently easier to craft sestories around.
