There was a randomized control trial on Medicaid patients in Oregon in 2008, randomizing patients to either get Medicaid or not. The main result of the study was that people were less depressed and less stressed by the prospect of getting money to cover medical expenses. "That doesn't say anything about the effectiveness of medicine," he says.
