During the first nine years of its existence, Motown had racked up over 100 top 20 hits on the Billboard charts. Barry Gordy's innovation was to find a way to get his music played on top 40 stations and on to the more mainstream pop chart. This was known as Crossing Over. That's what determined if you had a hit record, it must be a hit because the radio station is planned to death.
