The national ignition facility, also known as niff, is trying to harness fusion power. It's one of the most powerful scientific instruments ever developed. When nif isn't working on fusion, it does nuclear weapons work. This laboratory uses the world's most powerful lazer system to try to trigger a fusion reaction. The lab has 100 and 92 separate lazers, each one alone one of theMost energetic in the world.
Scientists are closer than ever to harnessing fusion power — the same process that powers the sun — by essentially making a small star here on Earth. Fusion could give humanity its best shot at solving the climate crisis, but the technology has yet to be perfected and would require billions more in investments. Is it worth the bet?
