The History of Route 66

Route 66 took on a new significance during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. The migrants from Oklahoma who moved to California along this route became known as Okeys. Despite most of the road not traveling through states considered to be in the south, most of the towns along the road had restrictions on black tourists. In Albuquerque, New Mexico, for example, they had over 100 motels, but less than 6% of them allowed black customers.
