The Chicken of Tomorrow Contest
In 1948, 40 finalists and six backups submitted 720 eggs each for the final round. At the state level, contestants sent either 100 straight run chicks or 50 cockroles. 15 males from each batch were slaughtered and dressed with the 12 best of those judged. While the eggs were incubating, each set was assigned a number so that the breeders would remain anonymous during judging.
In the 1940s the U.S. Department of Agriculture and A&P supermarkets teamed up to hold a contest to see who could breed the meatiest, most efficient, most visually appealing chicken.
