Sphodrias was a close associate of the other king, Cleombrotus. So here was an opportunity maybe to do a favor for an adversary and bring him over. Agisaleus now had proof that Thebes is growing ambitious and arrogant. Palopidus and his friends are deliberately trying to provoke a war with Sparta. These men are devious and determined. And Sphodrias, yes, he's a fool. His actions are reprehensible, but at root, he'm a decent Spartan. He's a brave leader. He's well loved at home.
