"I do a lot of work with carbon emissions and carbon footprints as really as a way into a much wider systemic challenge," he says. "We need to understand that they're all simplifications, we need to stand back and say is this metric telling us something useful? Or is it actually pointing us towards some kind of perverse action?" He adds: "Carbon emissions and even supply chain carbon emissions are in some ways amazingly simple... You take biodiversity and you've opened up a ton more complexity."
