The Importance of Recognizing Innocence
Blake's songs of innocence and experience may fit into the romantic genre due to its focus on childhood. The novel does not simply offer a praise of innocence but a warning that the value of innocence should be questioned in the light of experience. Tom's sense of his own innocence leaves him feeling unscarred and harmless. We must recognize our moral limitations, Eastcoat asserts, and acknowledge our capacity for evil alongside the simple goodness of innocence. Repentance, renewal of life, is the recovery of innocence.
