The shepherd is not a great metaphor for modern people, because we tend to think of the shepherd as someone like little lord fauntleroy. So abel was a keeper of sheep, but can was a tiller of the ground. Abel brought the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. You don't know that abel's sacrifice is low quality, cause it doesn't say, you know, ab brought god some wilted lettuce and then burnt it....
