Ricardo was born in a coastal city called Cocimbo. He began researching the history of people's relationships with the ocean. Ricardo often visited the Cultural Affairs Office in Coquimbo for his work. In 2005, he made his usual visit to chat with Mariana Palma, who was the director there. As many as 500 people died in a shipwreck that shattered the lives of thousands more - yet few people seemed to know anything about it.
