The Moatazalites and the Afterlife

If God is to be just, then doesn't he also have to deal fairly with his creatures? A famous story discussed by several Islamic theologians illustrates the point. From this, the Moatazalites inferred that humans must have power over their own actions since in the Quran we hear that God will indeed reward and punish us. But the problem can't be resolved that easily.
