There's lots of philosophical discussions in this novel. The idea of freedom isn't explicitly discussed except for the dev so he gives a lot of anti-materialism speeches that sort of sound conservative and oh you liberals today you materialists so you nihilists. There there's one explicit mention of these values that go beyond utilitarianism and beyond pleasure. I think it reflects the part of the psyche that's passionate not simply utilitarian or pleasure-seeking.
