Henry Morton Stanley was sponsored by both the New York Herald and the Daily Telegraph in London. His caravan was more than twice the size of the one that had accompanied him to find Livingston. For his hundreds of Zanzibari porters, the trip was months of carrying incredibly heavy loads on their heads and backs. When Stanley finally completed his mission, emerging at the Portuguese settlement at the mouth of the Congo River, he became the second white man ever to traverse Africa from east to west.
