User Research - I'm Listening to You
There's what psychologists call type one listening and what psychologists call type two listening. Type one listening would be, i'm listening to you through the lens of what i'm going to say next. Type two is really hearing, really understanding what someone is saying. You're fortunate enough to work with a user researcher, let them take the lead. If you're not, you can still gain some of these skills. There'l be some great techniques in there that would probably work forer as well.
