Socritius issued a list of three thousand men who he felt were suitable enough to be his associates in the new government. Theramenes objected on the ground that this number was far too small and too arbitrary, as it would leave a lot of good men outside this group. Still, without theramenes knowledge, critius and his faction schemed to make their three thousand reality. In order to pay the wages of the spartan garrison, critius ordered each of the 30 to arrest and execute one medic and confiscate that man's property.
