In countries where the male breadwinner ideal is widely endorsed women perform a larger volume of housework. In India we do see that even though fertility has fallen which should have reduced women's time burdens women remain laden with domestic duties and I think this reflects a global trend. The normative expectations that women should be performing this labor for men and for their children could be shaping women's responsiveness to economic opportunities.
We're in the 21st century, and it would seem that the world is finally moving towards gender equality, right? Not so fast.
