The Influence of Social Media on K-pop Dance

In this chapter, they discuss the relationship between K-pop dance and social media. They explain that K-pop exemplifies what they call 'social media dance' which refers to dance that is made for, circulated through, and happening on social media platforms. They give the example of TikTok dance challenges and how K-pop choreography is now mostly shared on platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. They also introduce the concept of 'gestural point of choreography' which highlights the upper body movements, facial expressions, hair gestures, and delicate finger movements that are characteristic of dance on social media. They argue that K-pop demonstrates how social media influences our understanding of dance and how global audiences are driven towards social media platforms.
