In 1066, Edward the commessor dies to have children. It is quite possible that he at some point considered lining William up. He had good relations with the Norman court and particularly in the 1050s in 1052. But it's clear that the Godwins won't tolerate a Norman succession. And it seems that Edward tries to line up distant relatives who's been in exile.
