The Effects of Ethanol on Osmolality

The patient had unexplained aniongap acidosis. He was treated with femaposol, a drug that blocks alcohol dehydrogenase and stops it from being metabolized by the body. If you have enough ethanol on board, typically the goal historically has been about 100 milligram per deciliter. That level will out-compete methanol or ethylene glycol for metabolism through alcohol dehydrogen enzyme.
