De soto's work on egypt in particular set the scene for me, because he identified very clearly what was tis functional about the mabaric regime. It perfectly fits the asimogle robinson model of an extractid regime that keeps all the fruits of growth in the hands of a tiny elite. I think it was mark malloch brown who spotted somewhere some grafiti in libya just before godaf's final demise, which he translated as, we want institutions. So part of what is going on at the moment there is a huge struggle to see whether those constitutional ambitions, which are clearly fresh in the minds of those who made the revolution, can be fulfilled.
