The Origins of German Identity
German was already an important administrative language in the empire by early 13th century. Imperial institutions like the Reichstag exploited new print media to disseminate legislation, mandates and news. However, there was no attempt to impose German as a single national language. Humanists certainly debated the origins of different languages but these elements always remained secondary in discussions about the empire.
