He realized that there was no way back for him into society, a which had been such a huge aspect of his pre prison life. He descended really into a sort of bohemian world - not something he'd previously felt any real sympathy with. So so although there were undoubtedly moments of sadness and loneliness, he lacked the real creative energy to produce anything.
