Mao Zedong's rise to power in China was seen as a liberation of people from oppression. The West saw it as another sort of communist revolution and were frightened by this during the Cold War. Mao is convinced that China's backwardness as he sees it is what's holding the nation back. Despite its huge population, China still lags far behind the United States, Russia and Europe in economic terms.
