What Does Prayer Do?
We have a tendency to treat prayer as an occasion on which we are informing god about what is happening in our lives and what we need from him. But when we think about it, of course, god doesn't need us to inform him about these things. When we pray, we participate in god's plan - and god gives us a share in his life in return. And so realizing that god's power is guiding all things teaches us to rely on him completely.
