The History of Science in the Roman Empire
The period immediately following the deaths of Galen and Ptolemy was dominated by Rome. All the Romans professed a deep respect for Greek language and culture. This was frequently only at a surface level, and they primarily regarded learning as a leisure time activity rather than something to be pursued full time. The effect of this was that the Romans didn't read many of the most important Greek scientific works.
