Patrick's job is to look after the sheep, a lowly position in an agricultural hierarchy where cows and pikts are considered more important. The farm on which he finds himself is far more primitive than the one his family owns. Patrick has grown up with stories about the ferocity of the Irish. Back in the 360s they had launched wave after wave of attacks on British soil.
