The Importance of a Universal Setup

GK MMM was the first work with a universal and updatable snark, but it didn't fall into this template of a polynomial commitment scheme. It had some efficiency, like problems, but there it was really a setup per circuit size rather than size bound. Most production circuits now allow you to add randomness once every two months or so. There is one exception: A project perpetual powers of tau that's from the EF.
