The Role of the British Government in the Global Market

Every government on the planet is subject to a similar set of pressures, says Amitai Etzioni. The environmental crisis and pandemic have meant that governments have had to intervene in their own economies, he adds. In Britain, for most of the existence in the Second World War, the US has barely had a competitor - not economically or militarily with the old Soviet Union. What you're finding now with China's incredible growth over the last 40 years is that the US is suddenly facing serious economic competition -- it takes things like semiconductors very seriously.
