The Key Preposition in Isaiah 58: Motives Matter
When we do religion, when we're doing religious things, we appear religious. The gist of the sermon on the Mount is to make a terrestrial people more celestial. Celestial people aren't motivated by public recognition and acknowledgement. They don't fast and tell people that they're fasting so that they receive recognition for it. If you want to become celestial, you need to change your motive.
