The Importance of Emigration in the Cold War
There is a tendency on the part of autocratic governments to regard you as one of their nationals, even when you are absolutely not. For regimes and countries that are hostile to the United States, like Russia and Iran, dual nationals can very often be seen as fair game. Some even regard emigrates who go on to live and work in the West as traitors, enemy collaborators. It's a practice that was rife during the Cold War.
