The MOS 6532: The Best Chip Ever
The 6507 had no instructions for division or multiplication, so a programmer has to write those out long form. That means if you need to multiply, you have to tack on some boilerplate code. Petal recalls quoting Atari $12 per unit for a 6507 and a mysterious ram slash IO slash timer chip. The bottom line is that Atari was getting a really, really good deal.
