We use the same root word. I have a companion. The person you marry might be called a lifelong companion. A pet who is housebroken will go to the bathroom in a place you want them to. If you like cats, that's probably one of the reasons you like them, because cats are cleaner dogs. You might not buy a cat for companionship. Lot of the times the cats will just, like, leave you. They don't even want to be in the same room with you. A dog, that's very different.
