Rosalind's Experience of Love
All female roles in Shakespeare's plays were originally played by men. This is a young male actor playing an elite young woman, playing a boy and then an as you like it gets even more complicated because the boy Ganymede then tends to be Rosalind in order to woo Orlando. It becomes very hard to unpick those layers. You have a play which in many ways is made up of slightly contrived exchanges between people that nonetheless speak very resonantly to human experience.
