The poet of beowulf, within living memory, rite the grannies. The question is how do you reconcile those things? It shouldn't work together but in beowulf it does. We see people like rotgar and beowulf seem to almost act like the sort of old testament kings in a way. And maybe there's some part of the answer to that question there.
