I've always kind of had this idea that people who were inner oriented were much better at being happy than people who were externally oriented. But now I get it because they were building up these images for others. It's striking how deluded we are about our pursuit of happiness. We trick ourselves and other people into thinking that that is the real reason why we do things. This goes back to what I was saying earlier about how we don't like to reveal our unflattering motivations for status or virtue signaling. And I think one of the biggest ways that we cover up those unflattering reasons for our behavior is by covering them up with happiness.
