Dulee Singh was five years old when he became Maharaja of the Punjab. He couldn't really remember his father, the fearsome Ranjit Singh. His mother Jindon refused to be screened off in the woman's quarters. She told him to resist at every turn. The mid-19th century was not an especially good time to be a noble woman in India.
