On may eighteenth, the french senate declared napoleon bonaparte emperor of the french. It would be months before his coronation, but napoleon the first now ruled as a monarch. In late august, napoleon ordered his forces at boulogne to break the camps along the channel that they had occupied for years. They would begin marching south and east towards the rhine in preparation for a renewed war on the continent which every one knew was coming.
