The west can inflict real pain on russia by isolating it from them. Taking physical control of poor, unconnected territories like crimea and especially the eastern parts of ukraine only adds to the costs that russia will need to bear. The idea with geo political offensives is usually to appear, intimidate, make credible threats, and through that, to pressurize the target into doing what the geo political agent wants.
