Academia is an extremely hierarchical institution, it's sort of medieval in its structure. There's a serious emphasis on rank. People who make it to the full professor rank tend to really believe they got there because they deserved it. And whatever their ostensibly egalitarian politics might be, they tend not to be that sympathetic to people below them and seem very happy to exploit them on possible.
