Ishmael in Moby Dick?
The main character of Moby Dick, Ishmael, is the classic outcast in the Bible. Melville felt like an outcast, felt like nobody appreciated him, that sort of thing. I think it's part of the modern condition to feel alienated, to feel like an outcasts. And Melville's answer over and over again, and it's essentially the same as Mumford's answer, is you try to make meaning out of it.
