The Marines are relieved after the first month by which time the island is allegedly pacified, but of course it hasn't really been pacified. The battle goes on for another few weeks after that until the army finally takes complete control of the island and the Japanese commander in time on a Japanese fashion commit suicide. So I suppose the war comes to an end for the Devil Dogs when the war come to an end,. When you have victory at Okinawa and then of course you have the dropping of the atomic bombs and the signing of the surrender, they fought from the first until the very last.
